Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, builds on 20 years of supporting the LGBT+ community with its annual awareness campaign marking the start of 2024’s Pride celebrations and this week’s International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.
“At IKEA we stand together with the LGBT+ community to celebrate love, diversity, and inclusion”
– Sara Del Fabbro, Deputy Retail Manager, Ingka Group
‘Love starts at home’ is a series of short films featuring people from the LGBT+ community sharing their real stories, told in their own words. They share their experiences and personal coming-out stories and discuss the need for, and challenges of, acceptance from those around them.
As Boris, one of the individuals featured in ‘Love starts at home’, shares: “It took a really long time for me to fully accept myself. So when I was 21 years I old came out to my Mum. It was a very big argument. But I know my Mum, and the most important thing for her is to have a home with love. So, she decided to listen to me.
“For myself, love really started at home. Home is the base. Home is where you can be yourself, where you can just take off the mask and just be who you are.”

‘Love starts at home’ explores the concept of home as the starting point of individuals stories. The personal experiences show how home can be the foundation for self-confidence that’s carried out into the wider world. Acceptance at home is especially important for someone coming out about their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Sara Del Fabbro, Deputy Retail Manager, Ingka Group explains: “At IKEA we stand together with the LGBT+ community to celebrate love, diversity, and inclusion. We believe that ‘Love starts at home,’ and we are proud to support both within our workplaces and in the wider community, bringing together our expertise in life at home with our long-standing dedication to supporting everyone who is a part of the community.”
While IDAHOBIT is one day, Ingka Group is continuously pushing for support and acceptance of LGBT+ individuals and combating any form of bias or discrimination. The company is committed to creating an environment that fosters a more inclusive, diverse world with these values reflected in everyday actions.
“’Love starts at home’ is a great opportunity for us to come together around supporting the LGBT+ community,” adds Del Fabbro. “We know that our LGBT+ co-workers feel a strong sense of belonging at IKEA, but we still have a lot of progress to make both in the workplace and in society.”
With ‘Love starts at home’ IKEA aims to show the importance of fostering LGBT+ acceptance while reminding us all how essential it is to be an ally to the community. Read more about Ingka Group’s work to support the LGBT+ community.
