Ingka Investments, one of the three core business areas of Ingka Group, has invested in RetourMatras, a Dutch mattress recycler, in an exciting partnership which will see recycling increased in the country.
RetourMatras dismantles mattresses in the Netherlands and prepares more than 90% of the materials for reuse.
This investment will support RetourMatras in growing the recycling capacity to over 1 million mattresses per year in the Netherlands, while enabling the company to substantially contribute to the country’s recycling targets.
“Ingka Investments supports the vision and mission of IKEA by investing in innovative companies supporting amongst others the transition towards a circular economy. RetourMatras provides an opportunity to further scale-up mattress recycling, initially in The Netherlands, and possibly in other countries where IKEA Retail is active.” says Krister Mattsson, Managing Director of Ingka Investments.
IKEA is regarded as the most sustainable retailer in the Netherlands, according to consumers in the annual Sustainable Brand Index of April 2019.
Nanne Fioole, director and co-shareholder of RetourMatras, added: “Through this investment, RetourMatras can offer new clients, including IKEA Netherlands, a sustainable alternative for processing disposed mattresses. As an additional benefit, we decrease the distance to our sources and thus reduce our CO2 footprint.”
RetourMatras announced Ingka’s investment alongside financing from Renewi, a waste-to-product company, that gives new life to used materials every day.
