IKEA advances retail innovation with 24/7 pick-up lockers

IKEA, a leading retailer, is enhancing its stores, fulfilment units, and digital experiences to better serve customers by introducing 24/7 pick-up lockers in Finland, linked to a new customer distribution center in Lommila.

“In the past, a new distribution centre’s sole purpose was fulfilment and replenishment. Yet, with this approach, we are redefining the role of our warehouses. They continue to meet our operational and fulfilment needs while also providing customers with an additional, cost-effective service option”

– Marcus Baumgartner, Global Fulfilment & Services Manager, IKEA Retail (Ingka Group)

The new IKEA Distribution Centre in Lommila is a prime example of how IKEA is driving development on a global scale. The €55 million investment combines distribution operations and customer pick-up services under one roof, allowing for a more seamless, efficient flow of products. The facility also houses Finland’s largest number of pick-up lockers, enabling customers to retrieve everything from small home accessories to entire kitchens – whenever it suits them, day or night. “In the past, a new distribution centre’s sole purpose was fulfilment and replenishment. Yet, with this approach, we are redefining the role of our warehouses. They continue to meet our operational and fulfilment needs while also providing customers with an additional, cost-effective service option,” shares Marcus Baumgartner, Global Fulfilment & Services Manager, IKEA Retail (Ingka Group).

Similar initiatives have been introduced in the UK, where IKEA has rolled out pick-up lockers to provide greater flexibility for customers. Sustainability remains a key focus across these efforts. The new facility in Finland is designed to reduce emissions through electric vehicle deliveries and features 1,744 solar panels, generating a third of its energy needs. Additionally, geothermal heating and biodiversity initiatives further support the company’s commitment to environmentally responsible retail solutions.

The new initiative in Finland marks a significant step toward a more customer-centric, sustainable, and digitally integrated future for IKEA global fulfilment and services network, proving that innovation in retail goes far beyond the showroom floor.

As customer behaviours change and the world evolves, IKEA will continuously adapt and improve its customer experience to stay relevant and push boundaries. From elevating the in-store experience and adding customer-facing features in distribution centers, to new interactive digital features and clever home furnishing solutions – IKEA reinforces its position as one of the world’s largest furniture retailers and a true life-at-home partner to millions of people worldwide.
