Today IKEA opened the doors of a new city store in Copenhagen, bringing a new retail experience to the heart of the city. This marks the first IKEA city store in Denmark and sixth overall, reaffirming the company’s aim to expand and bring affordable home furnishing closer to customers.
“Today we have come as close to the people in Copenhagen as we have ever been. The home furnishing expertise, the design, and the sustainable elements incorporated in this city store reflect our passion for creating a better everyday life for the many. As we keep investing in similar locations around the world, we look very much forward to welcoming our customers to this exceptional store”
– Tolga Öncü, Head of Retail, Ingka Group
The new city store is located in downtown Copenhagen making it accessible for more than a million people within 20 minutes by bike, public transport or car. The showrooms in the store are designed based on insights gathered from over 100 home visits in Copenhagen, where people shared their needs and aspirations for a better everyday life.
The three-story building features large glass sections and white surfaces that resemble undulating curtains. The store boasts 500 parking spaces for bikes while loaner cargo bikes and direct home delivery options are also offered for customers. Two hundred and fifty trees and shrubs are planted on-site with a quarter of the façade covered with green planting and solar cells on the roof. The open roof garden serves as a new public park within the city and will become part of a long green pedestrian street on rooftops.
Responding to the evolving needs of its customers, IKEA has recently been taking steps to become a true omnichannel retailer in Denmark. In addition to opening the new city store, the acquisition of the country’s second-largest logistics center, CDC Copenhagen, further enhanced the customer offer with increased availability, flexibility, and faster deliveries.
The new city store in Denmark is part of Ingka Group’s EUR 3 billion commitment to expand globally, creating new customer meeting points, and upgrading existing stores to ensure a seamless and integrated customer experience both physically and digitally.
The company has recently opened new city stores, such as Rome, Madrid, and Barcelona.
