To mark World Menopause Day on 18th October, and as part of its ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive workplace that prioritises co-workers’ wellbeing, Ingka Group is rolling-out new Global Menopause Guidelines.
“By encouraging open conversations and reducing any stigma surrounding menopause, we hope we are securing an environment where all our co-workers can thrive, feel valued, and continue to grow both personally and professionally”
– Ulrika Biesèrt, Chief People & Culture Officer at Ingka Group
Menopause is a natural life event that most people who menstruate will experience. Menopause marks the end of reproductive years, and is a transition that can span several years. While not everyone will experience symptoms during this time, changes to hormone levels can cause various impacts including but not limited to hot flushes, irregular periods, and insomnia. The onset of symptoms marks the start of ‘perimenopause’, which lasts up until one year following the cessation of menstruation, which is when menopause has been reached. Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, is committed to supporting its co-workers through the different phases of life. Recognising the impact that symptoms can have, it has released Global Menopause Guidelines to support co-workers navigating perimenopause and menopause. They also provide managers and People & Culture teams with the resources and understanding needed to support co-workers during this life stage, ensuring they can continue to thrive and grow at work.
Menopause is a natural life stage that can significantly impact physical and mental well-being. In addition to the impact on the individual directly, as menopause tends to occur between the ages of 45-55, it has the potential to negatively impact career progression and talent retention at all levels. In the United Kingdom alone, 14 million working days each year are estimated to be lost, with 10% of those experiencing symptoms leaving their role.
Recognising the importance of supporting co-workers during this phase, Ingka Group’s new guidelines provide practical advice and resources tailored to both co-workers and managers.
Empowering Co-Workers
The guidelines encourage open dialogue about menopause and perimenopause, aiming to break down stigma that has traditionally been associated with this life stage. Co-workers are urged to discuss their needs with their managers, People & Culture partners, or any trusted individual within the organisation. By fostering a culture of openness, Ingka Group hopes to create a work environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
The guidelines are being rolled-out currently, and outline support, which can include practical adjustments such as flexible working arrangements, providing additional uniforms if needed, and physical workplace modifications like access to desk fans or air-conditioned areas. These measures are intended to help co-workers manage symptoms effectively while continuing to contribute to the business.
Guidance for Managers
Managers play a crucial role in implementing these guidelines. It is critical to lead with kindness and inclusivity, ensuring that team members feel comfortable discussing their needs. The guidelines provide managers with tools and training to understand and support co-workers experiencing symptoms, both mental and physical.
Through continuous dialogue and a supportive leadership approach, managers are expected to create a safe and caring work environment. This includes being aware of cultural sensitivities and addressing any misconceptions associated with perimenopause and menopause.
A Commitment to Inclusion
Ingka Group’s new guidelines reflect the company’s broader commitment to gender equality and inclusion. By addressing the challenges that menopause can present, Ingka aims to retain valuable talent and reduce the barriers in the workplace.
Ulrika Biesèrt, Chief People & Culture Officer at Ingka Group, said: “Our commitment to creating a better everyday life for the many people includes ensuring that everyone at Ingka feels supported and empowered, regardless of where they are in their life journey. By encouraging open conversations and reducing any stigma surrounding menopause, we hope we are securing an environment where all our co-workers can thrive, feel valued, and continue to grow both personally and professionally. With the launch of these guidelines, Ingka Group continues to reinforce its dedication to a workplace where everyone can be their true self and reach their full potential.”
