As we reflect on International Women’s Day, we continue to celebrate the diversity that drives progress, especially in STEM, where women are leading key teams, such as the Global AI Department & Lab. Their expertise and leadership not only advance technology at IKEA but also contribute to the broader movement for greater diversity in tech, paving the way for the next generation. A global network of digital talent
IKEA has Global Digital Hubs, strategically located in key markets such as the Netherlands, Spain, India, US, Sweden, and China, where talent is united in turning ideas into reality. These hubs are more than just workplaces; they are centres of innovation where diverse perspectives shape the future of digital experiences.
Diversity is essential to the digital transformation of IKEA, ensuring that technology is inclusive, accessible, and impactful, just like the homes the company helps create. Whether designing AI-driven solutions, developing digital platforms, or strengthening data foundations, diverse perspectives drive innovation and better outcomes for many people.
As part of this commitment, IKEA continues to advance gender balance across the business. In FY24, women made up 50% of managers, and 46% of country CEOs, reflecting steady progress toward equal representation.
To further inclusivity, IKEA is expanding mentoring and reverse mentoring programs to ensure all co-workers, regardless of gender identity, have access to development opportunities. Additionally, new initiatives are being explored to better support co-workers with caring responsibilities, reinforcing a workplace culture where everyone can thrive.
The IKEA AI Department led by women
The IKEA AI Department & Lab is a strategic hub within a broader Data & Machine Learning organisation, focused on developing and scaling AI solutions that drive the future of IKEA. It accelerates the exploration, development, and deployment of complex AI technologies with high business impact, primarily for retail operations and secondarily for New Business and Group functions.
Led by Anneli Gunnarsson, VP Retail Data & ML and Rebeca Abella, VP Data & Analytics, IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), who oversee all Data & Machine Learning – the lab collaborates closely with product teams to identify opportunities, implement AI-driven solutions, and ensure adoption across IKEA. It specializes in LLMs, automation, and ethical AI development, combining research and application to keep the company competitive in a fast-evolving landscape. Once solutions are validated, they are seamlessly integrated into the business. As Anneli puts it, “AI has to work for people. The AI Lab transforms advanced technology into practical, ethical solutions that create real value and drive our business forward.”
But the voices shaping tech at IKEA are many. Recently, as part of the first IKEA Digital Series, DECODED, four leaders – Vera, Magda, Sofia, and Yolanda – shared their journeys in tech. They spoke about overcoming challenges, breaking new ground, and the importance of courage and engagement in building a meaningful and successful career. As they pave the way for future talent, they also emphasize that diversity isn’t just valuable, it’s essential for the following reasons:
